The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) held a National Public Awareness and Capacity Building Conferences in collaboration with the Government of Cambodia, on April 29 in Phnom Penh and May 2 in Siem Reap, Cambodia, with support from Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global (FITJP IP Global).
After the successful national conference held on June 14, 2023, in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, aimed at raising public awareness about the benefits of online services and strengthening the capacity to utilize them, subsequent conferences for the general public and IP stakeholders were held in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, respectively.
The conference was opened by H.E. Mr. Ngeth Vibol, Director General of Industry, Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, Cambodia and Dr. Juneho Jang, Senior Regional Manager, IP Office Business Solutions Division, WIPO. Mr. Kenji Tsuda, Deputy Director, Information Technology and Patent Information Management Office, Japan Patent Office (JPO), delivered his opening remarks remotely.
Training on the new online services was conducted by both officials from the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP), Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation, and WIPO for Cambodian IP agents, the general public, and ministry officials.
This conference coincided with the launching event of the Cambodia Patent Design Database, which featured enhanced data obtained through the digitalization project funded by FITJP IP Global. H.E. Hem Vanndy, Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, officially launched the Cambodia Patent Design Database. DIP published its first patents and utility models journal (2024/01) with 1486 applications and launched the Database, utilizing the WIPO Publish Cloud system.
The conference was opened by H.E. Vichea Suon, Director, the Department of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Commerce, Cambodia and Ms. Thitapha Wattanapruttipaisan, WIPO Singapore Office. Mr. Kenji Tsuda, Deputy Director, Information Technology and Patent Information Management Office, JPO, delivered his opening remarks remotely.
In addition to the capacity building of utilizing existing online services, this conference introduce the Cambodia Trademark Mobile Services project supported by FITJP IP Global.
The workshop saw active participation from provincial officials of the Ministry of Commerce, students from Vanda Institute, local IP professionals, and SMEs. Participants learned importance of trademark protection for their businesses and brands as well.
