Expert Meeting on the Madrid System for the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) of Brazil, and Seminar for Private Practitioners in Brazil

July 3, 2024

On March 14 and 15, 2024, we held a face-to-face expert meeting on the Madrid System for the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), and a Seminar for private practitioners in Brazil. Both events were organized with support from Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global (FIT/Japan) and took place in Rio de Janeiro.

This was the first bilateral meeting on the Madrid System for an IP Office in the Latin American and Caribbean region under FIT/Japan.

About the meeting

The main objectives of this meeting were:

  • to strengthen operational and promotional practices with INPI, which joined the Madrid System in 2019, through exchange of in-depth knowledge and best practices; and
  • to discuss future developments in administering the Madrid System.

Some 15 participants attended the meeting from INPI. One official from the Japan Patent Office (JPO) participated as a speaker.

The meeting focused on INPI’s current challenges and practices, such as electronic communication and promotion of the Madrid System. INPI, JPO and WIPO reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration in order to enhance operational efficiency and further promote the Madrid System in Brazil.

About the seminar

Taking advantage of the presence of experts from WIPO, the Seminar for Brazilian private practitioners was organized in a hybrid format with some 200 participants. It covered an overview of the Madrid System, recent updates from WIPO and INPI, information on filing international trademark applications and post-registration management, and eMadrid. The event provided a good learning and promotional opportunity for Brazilian practitioners.
