WIPO National Training Program on Examination in the PCT National Phase for Patent Examiners of Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT), Bangladesh

July 10, 2024

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) organized a national training program with Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) with support by the WIPO Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global (FIT/Japan IP Global) from May 19 to 21, 2024 at the premises of the DPDT.

The training program aimed at raising awareness for examination options, in particular, with a view to enhancing quality and efficiency of patent examination by using work products from the international and other national phases under the PCT and developing and improving capacities of patent examiners of the DPDT for examination work-sharing.

About the training program

Mr. Taegeun Kim, Senior Program Officer, Cooperation on Examination and Training Section, PCT International Cooperation Division of WIPO coordinated, organized and delivered the training program.

He gave lectures and discussed with the examiners of the DPDT on various substantive patent examination topics, mainly about work sharing and how the examiners can benefit from the PCT work products such as International Search Reports and Written Opinions even though Bangladesh is not a PCT Contracting State yet. The lectures included many actual case examples showing what patentability requirements are assessed and how under the PCT and some national practices.

All participants who attended the training program found the lectures informative and helpful and it is anticipated that participants will apply their knowledges and experiences to their work. The post training program survey showed very high satisfaction by the participants.
