Objective and Speakers

This two-day Symposium will provide a forum for the exchange of information on the protection of geographical indications at the national, regional and international levels and on future trends in that area. It is open to government representatives as well as users and any interested parties. The interactive structure of the program will provide ample time for discussion and the presentation of various points of view and opinions.

Presentations will be made by experts in the field of protection of geographical indications from Australia, Chile, France, Mexico, Peru, Spain and Uruguay, and by officials of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the World Trade Organization (WTO). Each presentation will be followed by a discussion during which the speakers will answer questions from the audience. Simultaneous interpretation from and into English, French and Spanish will be provided.

The Symposium will start on Wednesday, November 28, 2001, with registration at 9.00 a.m. and the opening ceremony at 10.00 a.m., and will be concluded on Thursday, November 29, 2001.

Registration (Participants and Accompanying Persons)

The registration fee for participants is US$ 200 for registrations received before July 31, 2001, US$ 250 for registrations received before September 30, 2001, and US$ 300 for registrations received after September 30, 2001. The registration fee covers the complete conference documentation, two lunches at the hotel, tea and coffee during breaks, participation in an excursion to Canelones, a dinner reception on November 28 and a cocktail reception on November 29.

The registration fee for accompanying persons is US$ 100. Registration for accompanying persons covers two lunches at the hotel and participation in the excursion to Canelones, the dinner reception on November 28 and the cocktail reception on November 29. Optional tours may be booked directly at the hotel.

Registration is to be made using the attached registration form with the International Bureau of WIPO, in Geneva, except for participants from Uruguay, who should register with the National Directorate of Industrial Property (DNPI) of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining of Uruguay, and by using a separate registration form to be obtained from the National Directorate of Industrial Property (DNPI), Rincón 717, Montevideo (Tel: (2) 902 5771; Fax: (2) 903 1140; email: dnpiuy@adinet.com.uy).

Accommodation

The Sheraton Montevideo Hotel will apply the following special rates to participants in the Symposium.

In order to secure booking at the above-mentioned price, hotel reservations should be made, with express reference to participation in the Symposium, before October 31, 2001, directly with the hotel under the above-mentioned address.

Transportation

The Conference Hotel is located 30 minutes by car from Montevideo International Airport and can be reached by taxi.

Accompanying Persons Program
