Madrid e-Filing
Apply for international trademark protection online
Madrid e-Filing is a free-of-charge, secure, digital service (powered by WIPO) through which you can file and we – WIPO and the participating intellectual property (IP) Offices of Madrid System Members – can process applications for international trademark registrations. You can directly communicate with your Office of Origin through the platform and receive – and respond to – any irregularity notices that we (WIPO) might issue.
All the basic information required to complete your application for an international trademark registration is imported directly from your national/regional trademark application or registration (your “basic mark”), significantly speeding up the filing process and reducing the risk of error.
Important! You need a WIPO Account to use Madrid e-Filing. Don’t have one? Create an Account now!
Why use Madrid e-Filing?

Tips!
- Check that all the information is correct, and where necessary adjust or add any missing details such as your email address, representative details, etc.
- Select the countries/regions where you seek international protection of your trademark.
- Modify the list of goods and services as required. The scope of protection of your international trademark registration can be narrower, but not broader. You can also limit the goods and services in just some of the countries where you seek overseas protection.
- Be careful! If later on you want to reintroduce these classes of goods and services, you will need to file an additional international trademark application. (You can then merge the two international trademark registrations.)
If you want to cover additional classes of goods and services in your international trademark registration, you will first need to file for a new national or regional trademark registration through your home IP Office!
What happens next?
- Your home IP Office checks that your international trademark application corresponds to the particulars of your basic mark, certifies your application, and sends it to us through Madrid e-Filing.
- We check that your international trademark application complies with all formal requirements (sufficient contact details, designation of at least one Madrid System Member, quality of images, payment of fees, etc.).
- If it does not comply, we will send you and your Office of Origin an ‘irregularity notice’, through Madrid e-Filing, explaining how to correct the issue within a given time limit (typically three months).
- If or once it does comply, we register your mark in the International Register, publish it in the WIPO Gazette of International Marks, send you a Certificate of Registration – acknowledgement of compliance with WIPO’s formal requirements – and notify the Members where you seek protection.
- Then it’s on to substantive examination by those Members, outside of the Madrid e-Filing environment. Find out more about substantive examination…
Tip! You can check the real time status of your application at any time using Madrid Monitor under eMadrid.
