AIPPI report on IP and Green Technology

The International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) has recently released a report entitled, "Climate Change and Environmental Technologies - the Role of Intellectual Property, esp. Patents". The report says that fundamental changes in IP architecture and laws are not needed in order to support development, commercialization and use of climate change technologies. A more creative and vigorous implementation of the IP system is warranted, including IP asset development and strengthened innovation ecosystems in developing countries.

Technology of the month

Biomass plastic with flame retardancy (http://bit.ly/1wuhTun)

Generally, bio-based plastic is combustible owing to the chemical structure. To ensure the flame retardancy, the volume and type of additives need to be optimized. This technology helps enable the flame retardancy of bio content material of the plastic.

From the viewpoint of carbon neutrality, amount of CO2 emission of bio-based plastic is lower than that of petroleum-based resins. This technology eventually contributes to the reduction of global warming.

Need of the month

Removal of organic matters from surface water (http://bit.ly/1AgoxPA)

This need has been identified as a part of WIPO GREEN's project "Needs and technology identification in Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines in the wastewater treatment sector”. Hai Phong Water Supply Company and other water companies in Vietnam are facing a problem of elevated organic matters in surface water sources because of increasing pollution from industries, agro-activities and fast growing urban areas. The conventional rapid sand filtration process can remove only 30-50% of organics, so there is a need for an affordable technology for retrofitting/upgrading existing treatment plants.
