WIPO Convened Regional Meeting of Experts on Developing a Model IP Policy for Universities and R&D Institutions in CATI CARD

A regional meeting was held in San José, Costa Rica from May 28 to 30, 2024, as part of the WIPO’s project aimed at creating a Model Institutional Intellectual Property (IP) Policy for universities and R&D institutions in Central America and the Dominican Republic (CATI CARD).
This meeting brought together representatives from universities and national IP offices of the seven participating countries. Mr. Alejandro Roca Campaña and Ms. Lien Verbauwhede represented WIPO and were assisted by two regional experts from Colombia, Mr. Juan Carlos Suárez Delgadillo and Ms. María Camila Duque Díaz.
The main objectives of the meeting were to exchange information on the progress of the project, to showcase a preliminary model of regional IP policy and to provide specialized training on IP management for the university sector. The meeting provided an excellent opportunity to advance the project, offer in-depth training on IP management to universities and strengthen the TISCs network in the region.
Participants engaged in various presentations and discussions. These included an overview of the project, an analysis of IP management needs in the university sector, a presentation of key elements of IP management in universities, and the introduction of the preliminary model IP policy.
