Five New IPTIs Join the Academy Network in 2023

The WIPO Academy is proud to announce that five new Intellectual Property Training Institutions (IPTIs) joined the Academy’s fast-growing network of IPTIs. Following the conclusion of projects at the end of 2023, the IPTIs in Ethiopia, Türkiye and Ukraine, in addition to the first regional IPTI with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) launched.

The five new IPTIs bring the total number of established training institutions to 19. Over 760 trainers have been trained by the WIPO Academy to deliver approximately 9,000 IP-related trainings and skills-building activities across the 19 established IPTIs which have supported nearly 520,000 participants to date. Further seven IPTIs are due to be completed by the end of 2024, including in Armenia, Chile, Ecuador, Indonesia, Pakistan, Syria, Viet Nam, along with the consolidation of the ARIPO Academy as a regional center of excellence in intellectual property (IP) training and skills-building.
The IP Academy of Ukraine, having 24 WIPO-certified trainers, has delivered approximately 100 training events and activities since 2021. The Turkish IP Academy consists of both the Copyright Training Center and the Industrial Property Training Center of Türkiye, with 56 WIPO-certified trainers combined. The two Turkish IP training centers have already delivered almost 250 training events so far.
The National IP Academy of Ethiopia has 34 WIPO-certified trainers who have been trained in IP and agriculture, and IP management and technology transfer. The National IP Academy of Ethiopia will deliver the first set of trainings in the first half of 2024.
The ASEAN IP Academy marks WIPO’s first regional IPTI which will service all ASEAN member states through its online services and will be based in Jakarta, Indonesia. WIPO has certified 44 trainers as part of the first batch for the ASEAN IP Academy, which has already successfully organized two skills-based trainings on emerging technologies and genetic resources, traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expressions in 2023.
What are the IPTIs?
The WIPO Academy helps member states set up IPTIs to meet their local IP training and skills-building needs in a scalable and cost-effective way. The IPTIs first launched in 2010 after a recommendation from the Committee on Development and Intellectual Property (CDIP). Since then, this tailor-made sustainable model of capacity building is one of WIPO’s most in-demand services.
Once established, WIPO continues to provide support to the IPTIs for developing, designing, and implementing training projects, programs, and services that serve common needs, or provide spaces for IPTIs’ to collaborate and network.
