Registration Open: Online WIPO-KIPO Professional Development Courses

Registration for the jointly offered WIPO Academy – Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) specialized professional development (PDP) courses for government officials is now open on the WIPO eLearning Center website. Due to the exceptional circumstances arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, the PDP courses will be held entirely online.
Online PDP training courses
The WIPO Academy and KIPO’s International Intellectual Property Training Institute (IIPTI) will be jointly offering courses on:
- Trademark Law and Examination,
- Design Law and Examination, and
- Specialized Course for Patent Examiners.
Registration is available through the WIPO eLearning Center website. The courses are offered exclusively in English to government officials from developing countries, least developed countries and countries in transition. Participation in the WIPO-KIPO courses is free of charge, and the courses will be composed of three to five half-day sessions each held in the afternoon Korean Standard Time (UTC+9).
WIPO-KIPO Training Course on Trademark Law and Examination
Registration for the WIPO-KIPO Training Course on Trademark Law and Examination is open until October 12, 2020 and the course is scheduled to run from November 2 to 5, 2020. This course aims to enhance the skills of trademark examiners or officials working in the area of trademarks from IP offices or relevant ministries and agencies.
The course will focus on the principles of trademark law and trademark examination procedures, alongside the skills and competencies required for trademark examination practice. Participants will be given the opportunity to exchange and discuss experiences and views on issues and topics related to the use of trademark law and examination practice.

WIPO-KIPO Course on Design Law and Examination
Registration for the WIPO-KIPO Training Course on Design Law and Examination is open until October 15, 2020 and the course is scheduled to run from November 9 to 11, 2020. The course aims to enhance the skills and knowledge of design examiners or officials from IP offices or relevant public institutions and ministries dealing with designs through analysis of current issues in design examination and related procedures.
The course will cover a range of topics under the theme of design law and examination including: the importance of design in today’s business, international law and treaties governing designs (including the Hague Agreement), specific search and examination case studies and examination best practices.

WIPO-KIPO Training Course for Patent Examiners
Registration for the new WIPO-KIPO Training Course for Patent Examiners is open until October 19, 2020 and the course will run from November 16 to 20, 2020. This specialized course aims to enhance the practical skills and competence of patent examiners and officials with direct knowledge and experience in examining applications working in major technological fields, including biotechnology and pharmaceutical, machinery, materials, electricity and electronics, and telecommunications and business of data.
Topics such as assessment of inventive step, tools and databases for patent search, international search and written reports, the patent litigation system, examination of biotechnological and pharmaceutical invention applications, as well as Artificial Intelligence-related applications, will be covered through practical sessions and case studies.

Why sign up?
By the end of each specialized course, participants will have acquired new practical skills, learnt about new issues and challenges specific to their respective domains and become familiarized with best practices in the field.
Participants who successfully complete the online PDP courses will be given preferential consideration, subject to qualification and availability of space, for the relevant face-to-face training courses held in the Republic of Korea in the future. The face-to-face training courses include the opportunity to benefit from hands-on experiences on site and study visits.
