WIPO China: Intellectual Property Fuels Global Green Innovation

Shanghai, November 8 - The "Intellectual Property and Green Innovation Development Forum" was successfully held in Shanghai. Ms. Liu Hua, Director of the World Intellectual Property Organization Office in China (WOC), attended and delivered the opening speech.

 

In her speech, Ms. Liu pointed out that the global climate crisis is becoming increasingly severe, and green development has emerged as a global consensus and urgent priority. In this context, digital technology, biotechnology, and nanotechnology are intertwining and deeply integrating, jointly generating an unstoppable wave of innovation.

Ms. Liu emphasized that green technology and innovation are crucial for driving systemic change and achieving sustainable development, while the intellectual property system is a vital safeguard for the effective implementation of green technologies. WIPO has been committed to supporting the development of green technology, working closely with various stakeholders, and launching a series of important initiatives, with WIPO GREEN being a model of these efforts. Since its establishment in 2013, WIPO GREEN has grown into the largest online platform for green technology within the United Nations system, with nearly 130,000 technologies from over 140 countries, attracting more than 150 partners and 2,500 users worldwide, and successfully facilitating over 1,000 technology matches, injecting continuous vitality into global green innovation.

She remarked that China is actively innovating in green technologies such as photovoltaics and wind energy, with invention patents for green and low-carbon technologies accounting for 36.8% of the global total. China is a deep participant and significant contributor to WIPO GREEN, contributing over 9,000 green technologies to its global database. The WIPO GREEN has achieved remarkable results in China. Since its pilot program in Beijing in 2021, the City Acceleration Project has solicited 24 green technology needs from Beijing and over 100 global technologies, signed nine cooperation memoranda, and successfully promoted the implementation of three demonstration projects. On October 29, a new project, the "IP Management Clinic," was launched in Beijing to provide IP training and support for Chinese green technology enterprises. On November 6, the City Acceleration Project was officially launched in Shanghai, further expanding its influence. It is worth mentioning that in June of this year, global renowned enterprises such as Huawei, CATL, GCL Group, and Xiaomi also joined the ranks of WIPO GREEN partners, becoming pioneers in the field of green innovation and demonstrating their firm commitment to sustainable development.

Ms. Liu expressed that WIPO looks forward to deepening cooperation with China to jointly draw a blueprint for sustainable development. The WOC will closely follow WIPO's strategic orientation, strengthen communication and collaboration with all sectors in China, build bridges for green innovation, provide high-quality IP services to cities, universities, enterprises, and institutions, and jointly promote IP protection and innovation development in China's green industry.

As one of the key supporting events of the 2024 China International Import Expo (CIIE), this forum was jointly organized by the WOC, the Patent Protection Association of China (PPAC), and the National Carbon Neutrality Industry Intellectual Property Operation Center. The forum was dedicated to accelerating innovation in green and low-carbon technologies and promoting the transformation and application of green and low-carbon patents. Mr. Lu Pengqi, Deputy Commissioner of the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), and Lyu Tingyan, President of PPAC, attended the event and delivered speeches. Over 160 representatives from national and local IP offices as well as industry professionals participated in this gathering.
