Every two years, the International Symposium on Geographical Indications (GIs) brings together representatives of national administrations, producers of GI products and GI specialists.

The Symposium provides a forum for exchanging ideas and perspectives on issues relating to the use and protection of geographical indications. It also offers technical insights and information on recent developments in the field.

The 2019 edition of the Worldwide Symposium on Geographical Indications was organized jointly by WIPO and the Portuguese Institute of Industrial Property (INPI); with the support of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).

Excursion

An excursion to the José Maria da Fonseca Museum House and its ancient wine cellars took place on July 4, 2019. This visit was followed by lunch at the Pousada Castelo de Palmela.

The Pousada Castelo de Palmela and the José Maria da Fonseca House are located in the Setúbal Península region, 30 minutes by coach from Lisbon.  This region has a rich gastronomy and traditional products like wine (the appellations of origin SETÚBAL and PALMELA) and cheese (the appellation of origin QUEIJO DE AZEITÃO).

The José Maria da Fonseca House produces Portugal’s oldest table wine, the “Periquita” wine (the “Periquita” trademark was registered in 1941).  The company also produces two dessert wines, “Moscatel de Setúbal” and “Moscatel Roxo de Setúbal”.

The Pousada Castelo de Palmela is a hotel located in the historic centre of the city of Palmela, with fantastic views over the Serra da Arrábida, the Atlantic ocean and the vineyards of the region
