Egyptian Trademarks and Industrial Designs Office now running with WIPO IPAS
October 23, 2015
At the end of September 2015, the Egyptian Trademarks and Industrial Designs Office began using WIPO’s Industrial Property Administration System (IPAS) to support its business process related to trademarks (and soon also to industrial designs).
IPAS is a workflow-based and highly customizable system that supports all the major business processes of an IP office. The Egyptian Office is among the biggest IPAS users in the Arab region and in Africa in terms of the size of its trademarks database and number of users.
New enhancements to cater to the Egyptian Office’s particular needs are currently being considered by WIPO’s development team, such as improvements in the Madrid Module for Trademarks as well as enabling bi-lingual search. Additional training and capacity building is ongoing and upgrades to the network infrastructure have been recommended in order to boost the system’s performance and availability.
The Office has also shown a keen interest in WIPO Publish, which may be deployed in the near future since the office regulations have been recently amended to permit the digital publication of trademarks and designs.
