Suriname Accedes to the Geneva Act (1999) of the Hague Agreement

July 10, 2020

On June 10, 2020, the Government of Suriname deposited its instrument of accession to the Geneva Act (1999) of the Hague Agreement (“1999 Act”) with WIPO’s Director General Francis Gurry. Suriname becomes the 65th Contracting Party of the 1999 Act. Currently, there are a total of 74 members of the Hague Union covering a total of 91 countries.

The 1999 Act will enter into force in respect of Suriname on September 10, 2020. As of this date, companies and designers with an entitlement under the 1999 Act will be able to designate and seek protection of their designs in Suriname. Further, users based in Suriname will benefit from the greater flexibilities provided for under the 1999 Act when filing an international application under the Hague System and in particular from its expanded geographical coverage, which extends to the member-countries of two inter-governmental organizations, the European Union and the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI), which are Contracting Parties to the 1999 Act.
