Hague System Yearly Review 2021

WIPO has released the latest edition of the Hague Yearly Review providing comprehensive facts and figures on, and analysis of, the use of the Hague System in 2020. As reported earlier this year, the Hague System showed some resilience in 2020 in the face of COVID-19, the number of international applications filed dipping by only 1.7%.

Key figures…

Applicants based in Europe accounted for 64.2% of all designs filed in 2020, reflecting Hague System membership – the majority of members are in Europe. Following the recent accession of Japan and the Republic of Korea, the proportion of designs originating from Asia increased from 3.1% in 2010 to 23% in 2020.

Special theme

This year’s Review includes a special theme providing in-depth analysis on renewals of Hague System international registrations, including trends and distribution of renewals by various criteria.

Did you know that between 2012 and 2017, the number of designs contained in international registrations increased significantly? As a result, the number of designs included in renewals grew strongly in 2019 and 2020, averaging 25% a year.
