RAYCAN Technology — Visualizing the Invisible

Established in 2009, Suzhou-based RAYCAN Technology (“RAYCAN”) specializes in the research and development of cutting-edge imaging equipment used in the medical and security world, for radiation detection, and more.

The company’s goal? To extend human vision with more effective “transformation” and more precise data, for a healthier and safer future. How does RAYCAN’s technology do this? By converting high-energy photons into visible light, visible light into analogue electrical signals, and analogue electrical signals into digital electrical signals!

The strong roots that helped RAYCAN to flourish

RAYCAN’s roots go back to an “All-Digital PET” (Positron Emission Tomography) research team on at Huazhong University of Science and Technology. In 2004, team leader Professor Xie Qingguo, invented the Multi-Voltage Threshold (MVT) all-digital sampling methodology – an analogue-to-digital conversion method used for ultra-high-speed pulse precision sampling.

With solid foundations to build on, the RAYCAN team could experiment and push boundaries to new limits. They quickly started to pioneer development of MVT-based all-digital imaging technology, bringing it into the digital age.

"PET digital imaging provides resolutions close to the physical limits, enabling people to see previously unseen structures. It allows us to develop new applications and help more users – from patients and doctors to scientists and drug development institutes."

Today, RAYCAN’s series of all-digital PET detectors is playing an important role in the medical world, helping for example in the fight against cancer, enabling earlier detection.

The company’s innovative technology has enabled development of:

  • the world's first all-digital radiation detection solution, installed in hundreds of hospitals in China;
  • security screening technology capable of identifying different substances such as toxic materials and narcotics;
  • all-digital PET/CT scanning solutions for animals, installed in scientific and research institutions from Chicago in the United States of America (USA) to Turku in Finland;
  • and more.

Using a multi-brand strategy to foster awareness

RAYCAN has successfully developed three distinct brands for three distinct areas, helping consumers to distinguish between products quickly and easily.

  1. The name RAYCAN is a combination of the English words “Ray” and “Can”.

    "Ray" refers to invisible rays. "Can" represents infinite possibilities. Our philosophy is "Visualizing the invisible, Envisioning the future." By precisely digitizing invisible rays, we can provide visualized results for more people – scientists, doctors, patients, and more."
    RAYCAN
  2. RAYSOLUTION is a medical device brand that focuses on all-digital clinical imaging equipment.

    "RAYSOLUTION lets us see previously unseen things, opens new perspectives, releases MI’s (molecular imaging) unlimited potential, and creates a whole new future for molecular imaging."
    RAYCAN
  3. RAYPLUS is a professional medical imaging cloud platform product with built-in workstation-level image reading and processing tools. It supports different cloud architecture options and allows seamless connection to the existing software and hardware systems of hospitals.

Harnessing intellectual property to expand a brand’s reach

From early on, RAYCAN recognized the importance and value of intellectual property (IP) protection and quickly developed an IP portfolio. Why? To drive innovation, protect new products, build brand recognition, and increase awareness.

RAYCAN filed its first international trademark registration through WIPO’s Madrid System back in 2010, securing protection of the brand “Trans-PET” in Benelux (Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands), France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the USA.

The company then focused on protecting other potential product lines, including the brands Trans-CT, Trans-MRI, and Trans-SPECT.

From there, it started to develop and protect trademarks for its radiation detection products, "RadTarge" and "RadPavise".

To date, RAYCAN has filed 21 international trademark applications through the Madrid System. Five of these are currently active, including international trademark registration No. 1196168 used to protect the company brand “RAYCAN”.

Why did RAYCAN choose the Madrid System?

The Madrid System has played a crucial role in RAYCAN's global trademark expansion, allowing the company to register its trademarks quickly and efficiently in multiple countries through a single application framework and enter the global arena.

"The Madrid System helped us protect our brands early on, laying the foundation for our future international expansion."
RAYCAN

As an innovative SME, RAYCAN had to invest massively in research and development from very early on. Keeping other costs low was essential.

"It made financial sense to use the WIPO Madrid System. It was significantly cheaper than filing for national trademark registrations in each single country," says RAYCAN. "It’s also practical. We can make changes to our international trademark registrations if we need to – for example, transfer ownership, expand geographical coverage, delete goods and services, or even cancel a registration – through a single request and one set of fees."

What does the future hold for RAYCAN?

"We aim to help even more people around the world to enjoy a healthier life through technological innovation. We will maintain our innovative vitality, sustain our efforts in research, and hopefully apply the MVT imaging method to frontier scientific exploration," says RAYCAN.

“And we will continue to harness the positive impact of the WIPO Madrid System on development of our business, further expanding international recognition and protection of our trademark brands.”
