2023年7月28日

The WIPO Academy officially launched its newest offering, the Intellectual Property Training Program for Diplomats and Trade Officials, on July 27, 2023.

A briefing session was held in hybrid format to introduce the new program to WIPO member states. Around 15 permanent missions based in Geneva, Switzerland attended the briefing session, in addition to 60 representatives from permanent missions, intellectual property (IP) offices and IP Training Institutions who joined virtually. Member states benefitted from the unique opportunity to learn about WIPO’s efforts for supporting national diplomatic institutions, followed by a question and answer session with the experts and diplomats engaged to develop the specialized training content.

What is the IP Training Program for Diplomats and Trade Officials?

The IP Training Program for Diplomats and Trade Officials (IPDTO) is a customized and sustainable IP training solution delivered in cooperation with national diplomatic training institutions, experienced national diplomats, and IP experts. The content of the training program is tailored to explore the utility of IP as a development tool at the national level while relating IP to contemporary global issues relevant to diplomats and trade officials operating in the international IP arena.

The IPDTO comprises four key elements:

  • Planning and national dialogue between the WIPO Academy and the member state to assess the national priorities, identify trainers, and customize the training content;
  • IP training delivered online through a specialized course, followed by an in-person masterclass held at national diplomatic training institutions;
  • A training of trainers module to equip national diplomatic training institutions with the knowledge and skills needed for sustainable IP capacity building of new diplomats; and
  • Networking across national diplomatic institutions through the WIPO Academy’s Virtual IP Network for Diplomatic Institutes, and follow-up activities as needed.

Orientation sessions for diplomats based in Geneva, Switzerland will also be organized by the WIPO Academy in close consultation and cooperation with permanent missions to address strategic areas of interest pertaining to WIPO, its structure, services and activities.

How to sign up?

The IPDTO is open to all WIPO member states, and requests should be addressed to the WIPO Academy program administration.
