Mexico Concludes First Edition of IP Training for Diplomats and Trade Officials

The WIPO Academy supported the Matías Romero Institute, the diplomatic academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, with a tailor-made training program on intellectual property (IP) for diplomats and trade officials from May to July 2024.
Twenty-two Mexican diplomats, including those posted abroad, participated in the training to build the knowledge and skills they needed to navigate the complex landscape of IP in the context of international diplomacy and trade.
What did the training cover?
The training was delivered over two phases, the first of which included the self-paced Specialized Distance Learning Course on IP for Diplomats and Trade Officials (DL-008) which addressed:
- Fundamentals of IP for diplomats and trade officials
- Introduction to intellectual property, from copyright and related rights to industrial property
- Enforcement and emerging IP issues
Those who successfully completed the DL-008 course continued to the second phase of the program, which was an online National Masterclass on IP and featuring seasoned diplomats and policy makers from Mexico who have been involved in IP-related matters over their careers. The Masterclass was an opportunity for participants to learn about:
- IP in national and international settings
- IP as a tool for development and economic growth in Mexico and beyond
- Issues under discussion in the multilateral framework related to IP
