Dirk Pilat is a senior economist in the Directorate for Science, Technology and Industry of the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). He is currently responsible for the Productivity and Technology unit of the Economic Analysis and Statistics Division, which is responsible for work on productivity, industrial performance and patents. He was born in the north of the Netherlands and holds a PhD in economics from the University of Groningen in that country.
Mr. Pilat joined the OECD Economics Department in 1994, serving Working Party 1 of the Economic Policy Committee through work on the OECD Jobs Study, the OECD project on regulatory reform, and a study on the impacts of product market competition on economic performance. He joined the Directorate for Science, Technology and Industry in 1997, where his work has primarily focused on the contribution of science and innovation to economic performance, the contribution of ICT to economic growth, and the role of firm dynamics. He contributed to several recent OECD reports in recent years, mainly in the context of OECDs project on economic growth and "the new economy". These studies include: The Economic Impact of ICT: Measurement, Evidence and Implications (2004); ICT and Economic Growth: Evidence from OECD Countries, Industries and Firms (2003); The New Economy: Beyond the Hype (2001); A New Economy? The Changing Role of Innovation and Information Technology in Growth (2000); and Science, Technology and Industry Outlook (2000). He has published some 50 articles in journals and books. Since 1998, he has been a member of the editorial board of OECD Economic Studies, and of the Review of Income and Wealth.
