Rainer Frietsch finished a Commercial Training in Wholesale and Export Trades, before he studied Social Sciences at the University of Mannheim, Germany, where he placed particular emphasis on sociology and statistical methods. He is working as a researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI) in Karlsruhe, Department "Technology Assessment and Innovation Strategies" since October 2000. His work focuses on science and technology indicators, and here above all on patent statistics. Next to this, he is doing empirical social and economic research, with an emphasis on the connection between the education system and the innovation system.
As a national expert, he is among other activities a member of the working group on "Technological competitiveness of Germany" on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The work of the institute and the research group on patent statistics can be found on: www.isi.fraunhofer.de.
