English | Classification needs and first experiences with CPC and IPC quality issues - Mrs. Doina Nanu and Mrs. Christiane Emmerich Mrs. Doina Nanu, Content and Data Acquisition Manager, IP Services, PatCom - Thomson Reuters, London, United Kingdom, and Mrs. Christiane Emmerich, Product Manager - Patents, PatCom - FIZ Karlsruhe, Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen, Germany As the global need for patent information increasingly transcends the language and cultural barriers, the complexity of the tools that facilitate the data retrieval and analysis expands beyond the traditional confines of their initial purpose. The multitude of detailed classification systems, most of which originate from the IPC, is proof of the benefits that the classification brings to the patent user community. This presentation outlines some of the well known, as well as less obvious, uses of the classification in the environment of commercial databases. It also presents some of the challenges the commercial data providers face when dealing with globally sourced classification data and the implementation of major projects like IPC8 and CPC. |
