Why buy fakes? Understanding and transforming consumer perceptions of counterfeit goods

2024年2月29日 虚拟 (英文)
13:00 - 14:00 日内瓦 时间

Why do consumers purchase counterfeit goods? Is affordability the primary reason? What is the global perception of consumers towards counterfeits? Are there any differences among countries? This session aims to shed light on the motivations behind consumers’ decisions to buy counterfeit goods by analyzing the findings of the 2023 Global Anti-Counterfeiting Consumer Survey, undertaken by the Center for Anti-Counterfeiting and Product Protection (A-CAPP). Understanding consumer perceptions is key when designing campaigns to alter behavior. We will also examine successful anti-counterfeiting awareness campaigns that effectively address consumer tendencies to choose counterfeit products over genuine ones.

Online Advertising and Piracy

2023年8月31日 虚拟 (英文)
13:00 - 14:00 日内瓦 时间

This webinar explores WIPO ALERT, an international initiative that facilitates a public-private partnership between copyright enforcement authorities and the advertising industry to combat online piracy.||Advertisers often rely on automated systems to place their advertisements on websites, and in this process, ads are sometimes placed on websites that offer copyright-infringing content. Legitimate advertisers inadvertently end up contributing to the revenue of these illegal websites. Since its launch in 2019, WIPO ALERT offers a secure platform through which national agencies share lists of copyright-infringing websites with the advertising sector for the purpose of preventing the placement of legitimate advertising on such websites and to reduce the flow of revenue to those sites (a “follow-the-money” approach). By using the WIPO ALERT database, advertisers can ensure that their ads do not end up on pirate websites, safeguarding their brand reputation.||This webinar is organized with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) of the Republic of Korea.

Online Piracy and Cybercrimes

2023年7月27日 虚拟 (英文)
13:00 - 14:00 日内瓦 时间

There is undoubtedly a clear nexus between online piracy and malware distribution. For example, pirate websites and apps frequently serve as a delivery mechanism for malware by enticing unsuspecting users to download and install the infected files on their devices. These malware infections can lead to a range of disastrous outcomes, including data breaches, identity theft, and fraud. Understanding the relationship between online piracy, malware, and cybercrimes is crucial in developing effective strategies to combat online piracy and protect against cybercrimes.
