WIPO’s International Trademark System Marks 1.5 Millionth Registration
November 26, 2019WIPO’s Madrid System has recorded its 1.5 millionth international registration, marking an important milestone for the International Trademark System that provides a convenient and cost-effective solution for registering and managing trademarks in up to 122 countries.
Through the Madrid System, brand owners may file a single international application to seek trademark protection in multiple member countries. This streamlines the process of obtaining and managing trademark registrations, which saves time and money.
“The Madrid System helps enterprises establish a market presence in a cost-effective manner - this is of critical importance in an increasingly global marketplace,” said WIPO Director General Francis Gurry. “This important milestone is a testament to the growing importance of the Madrid System and brands in international commerce.”
The 1.5 millionth registrant
Colombia-based textile manufacturer Coltejer deposited the 1.5 millionth registration, with 11 designations in North America, Europe and Asia as part of an overseas growth strategy. The Madrid System has helped the company seek protection for its “COLTEJER” trademark as it expands internationally.
Mr. Andrés Berdugo Gómez, Director General of Coltejer said: “The Madrid System is a great opportunity for companies at the global level to obtain recognition of their marks when entering new markets. The main advantage provided by the System is the reduction of costs for the protection of trademarks abroad.”
The Madrid System: an ever-expanding framework
This year, WIPO celebrated the 30 years of the Madrid Protocol, the cornerstone of the Madrid System that allowed for its expansion across the globe.
In 1988, the Madrid Union counted only 25 members. Today, that number has more than quadrupled with 106 members, covering 122 countries, and many more in the pipeline. The Madrid System welcomed three new members in 2019: Canada, Brazil and Malaysia, making the Madrid System a truly global solution for brand owners seeking trademark protection abroad.
