WIPO & Australia’s QUT Launch Post Graduate Program in IP Law

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and Queensland University of Technology (QUT) have joined ranks to offer a Master of Intellectual Property Law program from February 2010.  This program was launched by the WIPO Director General, Mr. Francis Gurry, Director General of IP Australia, Mr. Philip Noonan, and Executive Dean of QUT’s Faculty of Law, Professor Michael Lavarch, in Brisbane on August 5, 2009.

This innovative course offers a unique opportunity for students to acquire a deeper understanding of the principles of intellectual property (IP) law and, in particular to focus on IP developments with an emphasis on Asia-Pacific countries.  

Commenting on the program, Mr. Gurry said “The QUT/WIPO Master of Intellectual Property Law builds on WIPO’s existing collaborations with universities in Europe and Africa to make high level education and training in the field of intellectual property available to the Asia/Pacific region.” He added, “This collaboration furthers WIPO’s strategic goals by building a deeper understanding of the importance of IP in relation to global policy challenges, such as climate change, public health and food security.” 

Mr. Noonan said “As the Australian Government agency responsible for administering patents, trademarks, designs and plant breeder’s rights, IP Australia is pleased to form a strategic relationship with QUT to support the new Master of Intellectual Property Law program.” He further noted “that the program will assist Australian businesses to establish and maintain globally competitive positions by providing education and training in IP matters specific to the Asia/Pacific region.” 

Professor Lavarch said “The curriculum brings to Australia an international course covering such broad areas as the impact of technology on intellectual property and the emergence of new business models, as well as the protection of traditional knowledge, genetic resources and traditional cultural expressions.” He added “The course also focuses on the use of the IP system as a platform for diffusing and sharing the benefits of creativity and invention, and the role of universities in IP creation and commercialization.” 

The course covers 8 subjects spanning the range of IP rights and various IP management topics. The program will be taught by experts from WIPO, legal professionals and leading academics. In addition to law students, it is also suitable for professionals as each subject is taught in a week of intensive classes supported by online learning throughout the semester.
