The International Symposium on Geographical Indications (GIs), jointly organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) of the People’s Republic of China in Beijing from June 26 to 28, 2007, concluded with a better understanding of how to maximize the use of geographical indications to add value to agricultural products. The Symposium brought together over 300 participants, representing national administrations, producers of GI products and specialists in the field of GIs in order to exchange information and experiences and to discuss some of the most salient issues in this area.
Member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) have decided that further discussions were required on various aspects of a treaty on the protection of broadcasting organizations before moving to a diplomatic conference. The decision came at the conclusion of the second special session of the Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR) from June 18 to 22, 2007 which had been mandated by the WIPO General Assembly in October 2006.

The Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Dr. Kamil Idris, has welcomed a major breakthrough by member states in their discussions on a development agenda for WIPO saying it marked a milestone in the history of the Organization. Dr. Idris also congratulated negotiators for their foresight and commitment to bringing a crucial part of this process to a positive conclusion. Negotiators from 93 member states and 40 observers, meeting from June 11 to 15, 2007 in the context of a forum that is looking at proposals to enhance the development dimension in WIPO’s work, agreed on a final list of proposals to be recommended for action to the WIPO General Assembly in September 2007, including the establishment of a new Committee on Development and Intellectual Property (CDIP).
The Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Dr. Kamil Idris, met on June 15, 2007 the President of the sixty-second session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, Dr. Srgjan Kerim, who previously served as foreign minister of The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Discussions focused on the importance of intellectual property (IP) as a tool for development and wealth creation.

Member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) have stepped up work on a number of topical issues relating to trademarks and industrial designs. This came at a meeting of WIPO’s Standing Committee on the Law of Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications (SCT).
The Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Dr. Kamil Idris, met with the President of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Н. Е. Mr. Branko Crvenkovski on May 2, 2007, for talks on the strategic importance of intellectual property in promoting economic development and wealth creation. The Director General also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Antonio Milososki, the Minister of Culture, Mr. Arifhikmet Dzemaili, the Minister of Justice, Mr. Mihajlo Manevski and other top officials during his visit which focused on ways to further strengthen bilateral relations between the country and WIPO. In addition, the Director General received an honorary doctorate degree from the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in recognition of his contribution to the promotion of intellectual property as a tool for development.
