Assemblies of the Member States of WIPO (September 7 to 15): The Member States Examine the Program of WIPO

Geneva, September 7, 1998
Press Releases PR/1998/135

On September 7, 1998, the Assemblies of the Member States of WIPO began their meetings by examining the program carried out by the Secretariat from January to July 1998.

The Director General's report on the implementation of the program from January to May 1998-the first report on the execution of the WIPO program since Dr. Kamil Idris took up his duties as Director General-adopts a radically different layout from preceding reports: it now sets out for each of the 18 main programs the objectives that have been set, the activities carried out and the practical results achieved, and quantified against the objectives. This reflects the Director General's aim of transparency and accountability. A summary of the June-July highlights was also submitted.

In practice, it should be noted that the WIPO program and budget for 1998-1999 was not approved until March. Thus the new activities only began in the period between April and July, but with the remarkable quantitative and qualitative lift-off described in the report and in the summary, available on Internet at https://www.wipo.int.

The Member States voiced their satisfaction with the work that had been accomplished and expressed their wishes with regard to the ongoing work.
