The Director General of WIPO Pays an Official Visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran

On December 12, 1998, Dr. Kamil Idris, the Director General of WIPO, visited officially Iran, in connection with the WIPO Asian and Pacific Regional Seminar on the Importance of Protection and Management of Industrial Property Rights for Developing Countries being organized in Tehran from December 12 to 14, 1998.
On the occasion of his visit, his first since he took up his post in November 1997, the Director General met H.E. Mr. Seyed Reza Zavareie, Deputy Head of the Judiciary, H.E. Ayatollah Yazdi, Head of the Judiciary, H.E. Mr. Nadegh Noory, Speaker of the Parliament, and H.E. Mr. Kamal Kharazi, the Minister for Foreign Affairs.
On December 12, 1998, Dr. Idris participated in the opening of WIPO Asian and Pacific Regional Seminar on the Importance of Protection and Management of Industrial Property Rights for Developing Countries. The objective of the seminar was to promote closer cooperation in the field of industrial property and to provide a forum for participants to exchange views, experiences and to explore effective means for the management of industrial property by various users such as industry, trade, research and development institutions, etc., in the developing countries of the region.
The Seminar was attended by senior representatives from some 15 countries of the region, including a large number of participants from Iran. The above regional seminar was followed by a national seminar on the Management and Use of Industrial Property Rights for Industry and Trade, on December 15 and 16, 1998, in Tehran.
In his opening address, the Director General gave an account of the Organization's work program for the current 1998-1999 biennium.
The Director General also attended the inauguration of the new Industrial Property Information Centre of the Office of Company Registration and Industrial Property. He emphasized the importance of the private sector as a user of the intellectual property system and welcomed the setting up of the new Industrial Property Information Center as responding to the interests of the private sector.
