The Director General of WIPO Pays an Official Visit to Kenya

Geneva, June 4, 1998
Press Updates UPD/1998/19

On 27 and 28 May 1998, Dr. Kamil Idris, Director General of WIPO, paid an official visit to Nairobi at the invitation of the Government of Kenya. This was his first official visit to Kenya since taking up his duties in November 1997.

The Director General was warmly welcomed by Mr. Daniel Arap Moi, President of the Republic of Kenya, and by members of the Kenyan Government. During the talks in Kenya, the Director General presented the main guidelines of the new policy of WIPO and the orientations for the 1998-1999 program and budget, based on transparency, responsibility and the search for consensus. Dr. Kamil Idris further stressed the considerable progress made by WIPO's activities in the field of development cooperation and stated his willingness to provide the necessary logistic support for the development of the protection of intellectual property in Kenya.

Following his stay in Nairobi, Dr. Kamil Idris travelled to Mombasa to give an address to the sixth session of the Council of Ministers of the African Regional Industrial Property Organization (ARIPO) which was welcoming for the first time the head of another international organization. On that occasion, he encouraged ARIPO to rise to the challenges of tomorrow, such as globalization and adaptation, and further stressed the importance of intellectual property for the developing countries.

During his stay in Kenya, the Director General also held talks with the representatives of various bodies and institutions concerned by the field of intellectual property and with which WIPO intended to develop contacts.

The Director General expressed his particular pleasure at the warm welcome extended to him both by the authorities of Kenya and by ARIPO during his visits to Nairobi and Mombasa. It was agreed that cooperation between WIPO, Kenya and the African Regional Industrial Property Organization (ARIPO), of which Kenya is a member, would continue intensively in each of the fields of intellectual property.
