The Director General of WIPO Pays an Official Visit to Tunisia

From 7 to 9 June 1998, Dr. Kamil Idris, Director General of WIPO, paid an official visit to Tunis at the invitation of the Tunisian Government. This was his first official visit to Tunisia since taking up his duties in November 1997.
The Director General was warmly welcomed by the Prime Minister, Mr. Hamed Karoui, and also met the Minister for Culture, Mr. Abdelbaki Hermassi, and the Minister for Industry, Mr. Moncel Ben Abdallah. During their discussions, the Director General underlined the considerable progress made in WIPO's activities in the field of development cooperation and assured the Tunisian authorities of the Organization's support with regard to the technical and legal assistance required for improved protection of intellectual property with an optimum benefit for development in Tunisia. Dr. Idris also discussed with his Tunisian partners an important project to set up a workshop for the protection of Arabo-African folklore and cultural heritage; he visited the Center for Arab and Mediterranean Music, a vast pluri-disciplinary cultural complex devoted to music in all its forms.
During his stay, the Director General visited the National Institute of Standardization and Industrial Property (INNORPI). Discussions bore on issues of industrial property and their impact on the social and economic aspects. Dr. Idris emphasized the importance of encouraging young inventors and of establishing relations between INNORPI and the various research and teaching departments.
Dr. Idris also visited the Tunisian office for the protection of authors' rights (OTPDA) where he informed himself of the numerous activities deployed since its creation in June 1997. Dr. Idris emphasized the need to continue training qualified staff and the importance of human resources.
The Director General particularly appreciated the excellent welcome afforded him by the Tunisian authorities. It is planned that cooperation between WIPO and Tunisia (a member of the WIPO Convention) should continue intensively in each of the fields of intellectual property.
