A New WIPO-Accredited Training Program for Intellectual Property Specialists in the Arab Region

Geneva, June 12, 1998
Press Updates UPD/1998/21

From June 13 to September 3, 1998, the World Intellectual Property Organization, in cooperation with the Gulf Institute of International Law (GIIL), is organizing a Postgraduate Diploma Training Program in Advanced Studies in Intellectual Property in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

This prestigious program will be taught by leading intellectual property scholars and professionals from Arab countries in conjunction with WIPO staff. It is the first such training program to be accredited by WIPO in collaboration with a specialist training facility within a developing region.

WIPO's commitment to the training of intellectual property actors from government circles, the private sector and academia to promote the development of durable national intellectual property systems world-wide is a key priority in the Organization's program of work.

The WIPO/GIIL Diploma Program, which will be conducted in Arabic, will offer training modules in various aspects of intellectual property and will include study visits to related offices and institutes. The objective of the training program is twofold. On the one hand, it is designed to help participants acquire a more detailed knowledge of various aspects of intellectual property to enable them to effectively contribute to the strengthening of the intellectual property systems in their own countries. On the other hand, this program will equip participants with the know-how by which to implement the legislative and administrative adjustments required to fulfill obligations contracted under the TRIPS (Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property) Agreement.
