Geneva, November 16, 1998
Press Updates UPD/1998/39
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is holding, in cooperation with the Tunisian Ministry of Culture, an Afro-Arab Symposium on Copyright and Related Rights from 16 to 18 November in Tunis.
This regional meeting will be attended by all the Arab countries and some 15 French-speaking and English-speaking countries of Africa. The new challenges of copyright and neighboring rights management will be studied in depth.
The Director General of WIPO, Dr. Kamil Idris, and Mr. Abdelbaki Hermassi, Tunisian Minister for Culture, will each present addresses at the opening ceremony.
The aim of this first Afro-Arab Symposium is to provide the African and Arab States with the opportunity of examining and discussing the present norms for the protection of authors' rights and neighboring rights and the application of those measures within the context of the TRIPS Agreement (Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights). The meeting will also discuss the policy and activities proposed by those States in order to implement the necessary administrative and legislative measures for the successful operation of that Agreement. The Symposium will constitute an opportunity of choice for addressing the economic significance of electronic commerce and its intellectual property aspects in relation to the trading activities pursued through the processing and transmission of digital data.
The meeting will constitute a true forum for the exchange of varying experiences, defining common interests and studying various fields of cooperation. The fight against piracy in the copyright field, the protection of expressions of folklore and its current orientation, the administration of copyright on Internet and sanctions, the protection of audiovisual performances, of databases and of broadcasting organizations will be some of the numerous topics addressed.
Concurrently with this Symposium, the Director General will hold talks with senior Tunisian officials, in particular with Mr. Abdelbaki Hermassi, Minister for Culture, with whom he will discuss various projects of common interest.
