H.E. the President of the Republic of Moldova Visits WIPO Headquarters

The President of the Republic of Moldova, H.E. Mr. Petru Lucinschi, on Friday presented to the Director General of WIPO, Dr. Kamil Idris, a sculpture during his first ever visit to the Organization. At a ceremony at WIPO's Geneva headquarters, Dr. Idris thanked the President of Moldova for his gesture and welcomed the Moldovan delegation to the Organization.
Prior to the ceremony at which the sculpture was unveiled, Dr. Idris held talks with the President and his accompanying delegation. The talks focused on cooperation between WIPO and the Republic of Moldova. After the meeting, Dr. Idris told reporters "We discussed a number of projects...with a view to strengthening cooperation with Moldova." The projects would include the establishment of technical centers for training and documentation. Dr. Idris said "WIPO is fully involved in these projects."
Presenting the artwork on behalf of his country, President Lucinschi said "I am pleased and honored to present this sculpture...as a gift from the Republic of Molodova to the World Intellectual Property Organization. I hope that this symbol of national culture and patrimony of the Republic of Moldova will enrich, along with other States, the premises of this prestigious Organization." The piece, entitled "Moldoveanca"(The Moldovan Lady), is a finely crafted, polished granite sculpture of a woman kneeling and supporting a pitcher. It was sculpted by Alexandru Gavronschi.
Dr. Idris thanked President Lucinschi and said he was counting on the President's personal support to enhance cooperation between WIPO and the Republic of Moldova. The Director General praised efforts by the Republic of Moldova to strengthen its intellectual property system. He said he looked forward to further progress in this area. Dr. Idris expressed satisfaction regarding the nature of relations between WIPO and the Republic of Moldova and said these will be reinforced as a result of the visit by the President.
President Lucinschi said "We are relying on WIPO's support and assistance."
The Republic of Moldova delegation included the Vice-Prime Minister, Ministry of Economy and Reform, H.E. Mr. Ion Sturza, Minister for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Nicolae Tabacaru, Minister for Finance, H.E. Mr. Analtol Arapu, and Minister for Agriculture, H.E. Mr. Valeriu Bulgari. Senior intellectual property officials, as well as diplomats were also part of the delegation.
Since gaining independence in 1991, the Republic of Moldova, has moved ahead with enacting legislation in the field of intellectual property, in both industrial property and copyright. The Republic of Moldova became a member of WIPO in December 1991 and has since ratified key WIPO-administered conventions, such as the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property and the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works.
WIPO has provided technical assistance to the Republic of Moldova since the country's independence. Officials from the State Agency on Industrial Property Protection and other officials have taken part in WIPO training seminars organized by the WIPO Academy.
