Press Releases PR/2000/234
The Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Dr. Kamil Idris, met with the Prime Minister of Senegal, Mr. Moustapha Niasse, in Geneva on Friday to discuss ways to strengthen intellectual property protection in Senegal. Underlining the strategic importance of intellectual property to promote economic, social and cultural development in Senegal, the Director General pledged WIPO's continued support in assisting the Senegalese Government to develop an effective national intellectual property infrastructure.
In the course of their discussions, Mr. Niasse and Dr. Idris discussed bilateral relations and agreed on a set of measures to reinforce Senegal's ability to harness its creative potential. Such measures included training of qualified personnel, institution building and legal technical assistance, particularly in the field of geographical indications and in capturing the economic value of traditional knowledge. To this end, the Director General agreed that an official WIPO mission to Dakar would take place in July 2000 to develop a nationally focused action plan (NFAP) for Senegal. Dr. Idris also applauded Senegal for its long-standing work in promoting awareness of intellectual property issues at the regional level.
Senegal has been a member of WIPO since April 1970 and is party to six other major international treaties administered by the Organization, including the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property, the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works, the Hague Agreement concerning the International Deposit of Industrial Designs and the Patent Cooperation Treaty.
