Geneva, May 30, 2000
Press Updates UPD/2000/99
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is to begin consultations soon with its member states on the question of intellectual property and genetic resources. The results of this process will be submitted to the September session of the WIPO Assemblies.
This initiative follows a decision by the Fifth Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to work closely with WIPO to examine the role of intellectual property rights in the protection of biological and genetic resources, including questions of access and arrangements for benefit sharing.
