WIPO Director General Pledges Continued Assistance to Kyrgyzstan

The Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Dr. Kamil Idris, pledged today the Organization's continued assistance in supporting the development and use of intellectual property in the Kyrgyz Republic. In a meeting on the sidelines of the WIPO Assemblies, Dr. Idris and Mr. O. Omorov, Director of the State Agency of Science and Intellectual Property of Government of the Kyrgyz Republic, agreed on the strategic importance of intellectual property as a tool for economic, social and cultural development. Mrs. Zeinep Shaimergenova, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Kyrgyz Republic to the United Nations in Geneva and Mr. Ulan Daniarov, Attaché at the Kyrgyz Mission in Geneva also participated in the meeting.
In pledging WIPO's continued support, Dr. Idris applauded the Kyrgyz authorities, at the highest level, for their commitment to the use of intellectual property to promote economic growth and wealth creation in that country and underlined the important contribution made by the Kyrgyz Republic in advancing WIPO's work.
Mr. Oromov, on behalf of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Mr. Askar Akaev, presented Dr. Idris with the "Dank" medal for his achievements in fostering the development of the intellectual property system in the Kyrgyz Republic. This award was granted by Decree from President Akaev on 13 June 2003. President Akaev, an accomplished scientist, is strong supporter of intellectual property and a seasoned user of the system.
The Kyrgyz Republic has been a member of WIPO since April 1991 and is a party to a large number of WIPO-administered treaties including the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property, the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works, the Madrid Agreement for the International Registration of Trademarks and the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT).
