WIPO Director General Meets President of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia

Possibilities for further collaboration between the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to strengthen the intellectual property system in that country were at the heart of talks on December 11, 2003 between Director General of WIPO, Dr. Kamil Idris, and the President of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, H.E. Mr. Boris Trajkovski.
Meeting at WIPO's Geneva headquarters, Dr. Idris underlined the strategic importance of intellectual property as a tool for economic, social and cultural development. He welcomed the efforts by the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to upgrade its intellectual property infrastructure, including the recent adoption of several laws relating to industrial property and copyright.
Dr. Idris pledged WIPO's support to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia in further modernizing its intellectual property framework to ensure that the intellectual property system is more effectively used to leverage the nation's vast human capital to promote economic growth and development. The Director General said WIPO is prepared to assist in the implementation of a range of activities and training programs to modernize intellectual property legislation and upgrade enforcement mechanisms as well as to help in promoting awareness and use of the intellectual property system by small and medium enterprises, which are the backbone of most economies.
