WIPO Director General Receives Order of Oman

The Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Dr. Kamil Idris, has received one of the Sultanate of Oman's highest distinctions in recognition of his efforts to promote the protection of intellectual property and his support to the development of Oman in this area.
The Order of Oman was conferred upon Dr. Idris by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said and presented to the Director General at a ceremony in Oman on September 25, 2004 by His Highness Sayyid Fahd bin Mahmoud Al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for the Council of Ministers. The ceremony was attended by Mr. Maqbool bin Ali bin Sultan, Minister of Commerce and Industry; and Mr. Sherif Saadallah, Executive Director of WIPO's Bureau of Economic Development for Arab countries and Director of the Economic Development Department.
Dr. Idris expressed his gratitude to His Majesty the Sultan, the people and Government of Oman and congratulated the nation on its commitment to promoting intellectual property and its recognition as a tool for economic, social and cultural development. His Highness Sayyid Fahd noted the important role played by WIPO in ensuring protection for cultural heritage and traditional knowledge. Dr. Idris said Oman has played a key role in promoting regional and international awareness of the importance of intellectual property, in particular its relationship to traditional knowledge and folklore. He recalled that Oman hosted in January 2002, an International Forum at the ministerial level on the theme "Intellectual Property and Traditional Knowledge: Our Identity, Our Future" which looked at efforts to preserve and promote traditional knowledge; the relevance of the intellectual property system as a tool to protect traditional knowledge; and the use of the intellectual property system to generate valuable traditional knowledge assets.
In Muscat, Dr. Idris also met with H.E. Sheikh Abdallah Bin Mohamed Al-Qatbi, President, Majlis Al-Shura (Shura Council), H.E. Mr. Ahmed Bin Mohamed Al-Rashdi, Minister for Information, His Royal Highness Sayyid Haitham Bin Tareq Al-Said, Minister for National Heritage and Culture, and His Royal Highness Sayyid Fahd Bin Mahmud Al-Said, Deputy Prime Minister of the Council of Ministers.
