WIPO and Morocco Agree on Future Collaboration

At a meeting in Geneva, the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Dr. Kamil Idris, and H.E. Mr. Ben Abdallah, Morocco's Minister for Information, agreed on Tuesday, June 27, 2006, to further strengthen cooperation between the Organization and the Government to enhance the intellectual property infrastructure in Morocco for the benefit of economic, social and cultural development.
"WIPO is very happy about the positive collaboration with the Government of Morocco, which is committed to using intellectual property as a tool to promote economic, social and cultural development," said Dr. Idris after the meeting. "WIPO will continue to support the further development of the intellectual property infrastructure in Morocco," he added.
Minister Ben Abdallah assured Dr. Idris of both his personal commitment and that of his Government in promoting intellectual property in Morocco.
The talks covered a number of initiatives in which WIPO has provided technical assistance to Morocco in the field of intellectual property, both relating to industrial property and copyright. The Director General and the Minister agreed to broaden the scope of cooperation in promoting IP awareness and strengthening IP capabilities in Morocco. Dr. Idris said WIPO would continue to support Morocco in developing a balanced intellectual property system for the benefit of its inventors and creators and to boost the economy. In addition, the Director General stressed the importance of training courses for professionals. He also announced that WIPO will undertake a study on the economic importance of cultural industries in Morocco.
The Minister was accompanied by Mr. Abdallah Ouadrhiri, Director General of the Office of Copyright, H.E. Mr. Mohammed Loulichki, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Moroco in Geneva, and Mr. M'hamed Sidi El Khir, Counsellor, Permanent Mission of Morocco in Geneva.
The Minister and his delegation also held meetings with senior WIPO officials.
