WIPO and University of Khartoum Sign Cooperation Agreement

The Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Dr. Kamil Idris, and Professor Mohamed Ahmed Ali El-Sheikh, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Khartoum, on behalf of their respective organizations, signed a cooperation agreement on December 15, 2006 to further teaching and training in the field of intellectual property (IP).
The Agreement is aimed at promoting IP education at the University of Khartoum and in the Sudan. WIPO will provide support to the University of Khartoum for the development of human resources in the field of IP and support the emerging demand for refined, focused study of IP education, training and research.
During the signing ceremony, Dr. Kamil Idris said the Framework Agreement for Cooperation between the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the University of Khartoum is part of a strategy by the WIPO Worldwide Academy (WWA) to strengthen global partnerships with leading academic institutions around the world. He said the Agreement would contribute to efforts by WIPO and the University of Khartoum in their common endeavor to promote IP education in the Sudan and in the region as a whole.
Professor Mohamed Ahmed Ali El-Sheikh paid tribute to the Director General and his efforts to demystify intellectual property, and to enhance awareness of IP and its strategic importance in promoting economic, social and cultural development. Professor El-Sheikh said the signing of the Agreement was a first step in a process that would lead to greater opportunities for the teaching of IP in Sudan's academic institutions. He assured the Director General that the University of Khartoum is committed to working closely with the WWA in ensuring the realization of the objectives of the Agreement in the field of IP education and human resources development.
