SMEs from The Gambia Gain Valuable Insights on IP at WIPO-Organized Workshop
Babucarr Janko, 27, is a Gambian entrepreneur and founder of Janko's Creation, a business specializing in the production of batik and tie-dye products. Babucarr recently took part in a workshop organized by WIPO on how intellectual property (IP) can enhance the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in The Gambia.
Babucarr joined 24 other SME owners for the two-day workshop, where they had the opportunity to share their experiences, speak with IP experts, and learn more about how IP applies to their businesses.
The workshop, held in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of The Gambia, is part of a series of capacity-building activities coordinated by WIPO across the African continent. More than 12 countries have participated to date, including Kenya, Senegal and Zimbabwe.
In addition to increasing their IP knowledge, the workshop participants also learned practical skills, including how to apply for trademark registration, and how to utilize the Madrid System for international coverage and the Lisbon System for preserving geographical indications.
This newfound understanding has enabled Babucarr to see how IP rights can serve as valuable tools to safeguard his brand, add value to his products, generate revenue, and contribute to the growth of his business and the Gambian economy.
Intellectual property is paramount in ensuring a brand is recognized and well-protected both nationally and internationally.

Background
This national workshop, titled "The Effective Use Of Intellectual Property Tools By Small and Medium Enterprises," was held in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of The Gambia. It took place from September 11-15, 2023, in Banjul, The Gambia. The Workshop brought together over 25 SME entrepreneurs for a two-day exchange designed to serve as a platform for mutual learning, knowledge sharing, and capacity building among SME owners in The Gambia. SMEs play a pivotal role in The Gambia's economy, and learning from experts is crucial for their growth and competitiveness.
This is a WIPO project from the Regional and National Development Sector (RNDS) Division for Africa. The following project phase will select between 25 to 50 small business owners for mentoring and coaching to empower them to capitalize on IP tools and seize new opportunities for growth.
