WIPO IP Youth Ambassador Delivers Speech at UN Headquarters

One of WIPO’s Intellectual Property (IP) Youth Ambassadors from the Philippines, Chesyne Danielle Galura Pepito, delivered a speech about youth-led solutions to the climate crisis on Friday September 20, 2024 during the Youth Action Day of the Summit of the Future at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Chesyne was invited to represent WIPO at the #YouthLead: Strategic foresight in Climate and Sustainability session of the Youth Action Day, which was a practical session centered on ways to unleash the potential of youth when addressing the climate crisis. Chesyne highlighted the role of protecting youth-led solutions, and referred to IMAHE, the award-winning innovation he developed with his teammates, Josefino Nino O. Ligan and David Elijah Corsini C. Atup, and later patented as an example.
From three teenagers’ dream to an idea, to an invention that can help communities and bring us one step closer to overcoming the climate crisis. To my fellow youth, we are young, but we have grown because of the challenges given by this world, we are allowed to dream of a better future because it is ours to invent. As they say, necessity is the mother of invention, and in this age it is absolutely necessary for us to create, innovate and protect our solutions for a better tomorrow.

Chesyne was awarded the WIPO IP Youth Ambassadorship for the Philippines in 2023 along with his teammates, Josefino and David, for their innovative device, IMAHE, which can determine the quantity of micro-plastics in a water sample. The tool was developed to help local fishermen assess if the levels of plastic pollution in the waters are high. The trio later patented their invention and were nominated by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines for the WIPO IP Youth Ambassadorship, along with Yzhae Marrione Capuno Villaruel for her Multi- functional Saver Cane.
Who are the WIPO IP Youth Ambassadors?
Through the IP for Youth and Teachers Program of the WIPO Academy, WIPO spotlights young innovators, creators and entrepreneurs who are users of the IP system. To date, 15 WIPO IP Youth Ambassadors from seven different countries have been awarded for their innovative, creative and entrepreneurial achievements and are called on as role-models for other youth in their countries, regions and fields.
The WIPO Academy supports the ambassadors in:
- engaging with youth in their countries and regions to promote IP education;
- networking among each other; and
- enhancing their leadership and IP knowledge skills through trainings and mentorship.
