Xi'an, November 1 - The 2024 Global Key & Core Technology Conference & The China Robotics Competition, hosted by the People's Government of Shaanxi Province, was held at Xi'an International Conference and Exhibition Center. Ms. WANG Binying, Deputy Director General of WIPO, sent a congratulatory letter, which was read by Ms. LIU Hua, Director of the WIPO Office in China.
Ms. Wang highlighted in her letter that despite the decline in global R&D expenditure, scientific publications, and venture capital investments over the past year, technological progress has not stalled. Technological advancements remain strong in fields such as healthcare and computing, including generative AI, genome sequencing, and quantum computing prototypes. The two innovation waves identified by WIPO - the Digital Age wave and the Deep Science wave - continue to converge, driving global innovation forward. Since 2019, WIPO has held nine sessions of the "Conversation on IP and Frontier Technologies", attracting over 9,000 participants from 172 countries to discuss the impact on IP of frontier technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI).
Ms. Wang particularly commended China's outstanding performance in innovation. In the Global Innovation Index 2024, China ranked 11th, remaining the only middle-income economy among the top 15. China hosts 26 of the world's top 100 science and technology clusters, more than any other country. China also holds 60 percent of global computer technology patents, 40 percent of AI patents, and 33 percent of semiconductor patents. As an innovation leader in west China, Xi'an ranked 18th among global science and technology clusters for the second consecutive year.
Since 2017, the Global Key and Core Technology Conference has held seven editions, establishing itself as a crucial platform for gathering key and core technology resources, displaying achievements, and fostering collaboration. This edition's theme, "Key and Core Technology: New Productivity Boosters", incorporates the China Robotics Competition, highlighting the integration of key and core technology innovation and practical application. The conference also announced Xi'an's major breakthroughs in key and core technology, national science and technology award project achievements, and held signing ceremonies for scientific and technological innovation collaboration projects, further promoting the development of key and core technology innovation.
