Expert Consultative Group on the Valuation of Intangible Assets
The potential of the use of intellectual property and related intangible assets to facilitate access to financing, is vast and has been gaining attention in recent years due to the increasing importance of knowledge-based economies. In November 2022, WIPO organized its Inaugural High-level Conversation on Unlocking Intangible Asset Finance. During this event valuation was repeatedly identified as a major obstacle to mainstream its acceptance. For this reason, WIPO decided to organize an Expert Consultative Group on Valuation of Intangible Assets (ECG) to help create a clear path.
After careful deliberation, a select group of senior experts with firsthand knowledge of intangibles valuation or an institutional stake in intangible asset finance were chosen to be members of the ECG. They have been tasked to review current practices and existing gaps on how valuation is deployed in intangible asset financing, and they will take technical deep dives on topics identified as major challenges.
To aid the discussion, the preparation of two input white papers was commissioned by WIPO – a paper on the theoretical foundations of intangibles valuation, and a paper reflecting the perspective of practitioners in different regions of the world. The main thrust of these papers is what is needed in terms of valuation to benefit the intangible asset finance ecosystem, or more concretely, what role these factors have in facilitating intangible asset finance.
