Algiers, Algeria - September 19 to 21, 2023
In a significant step towards enhancing intellectual property (IP) awareness and support for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and startups, Algeria has embarked on the implementation of an IP Management Training Program. This event, a joint effort involving the Algerian Institute of Industrial Property (INAPI), WIPO Algeria Office (WAO) and the IP for Business Division (IPBD), aims to equip business support institutions with the necessary tools and knowledge to provide effective and sustainable IP support for the Algerian business community. This training is part of a broader project under implementation in Algeria to develop business support services within INAPI and selected business support institutions. This event was preceded by extensive preparatory work to assess the level of IP awareness, access and utilization of IP among SMEs and startups, an evaluation of the efforts made to support SMEs in leveraging the IP system along with a mapping exercise to identify relevant SME service providers in Algeria.
The program commenced with a full-day session dedicated to imparting more than 35 participants with a foundation in IP management. Participants were guided through various aspects of IP, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of its significance in the business world.
The subsequent days narrowed down the participants to a more intimate group of 10 companies, enabling deeper engagement. The second day featured a presentation and practical demonstration of the WIPO IP Diagnostics tool. This interactive session encouraged participants to identify IP-related areas of interest and sparked valuable discussions.
The third day featured presentations by Director General Abdelhafid Belmehdi of INAPI and Senior Executive Leila Tabet of the Agency for the Development of SMEs and the Promotion of Innovation (ADPMEPI). They shared valuable insights into their organizations and the services they offer to businesses, fostering a platform for feedback and discussion regarding the specific needs of businesses in utilizing the IP system.
This event underscores Algeria's commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and protecting intellectual property rights among its SMEs and startups. By equipping these enterprises with the knowledge and tools to manage IP effectively, Algeria aims to empower them to compete in the global marketplace and drive economic growth.
As the program advances, it is expected to cultivate a new generation of IP-savvy SMEs and startups, to succeed in an increasingly competitive business environment. For instance, we are preparing to unveil a tailored Algerian version of specific publications from the WIPO series of guides on IP for businesses. Stay tuned for more updates! Algeria's journey towards IP excellence is indeed one to watch, as it unfolds with promise and potential.
