Launch of Polish Edition of WIPO Startup Guide and One-Day IP Workshop

September 27, 2024

On September 18, 2024, in cooperation with the Polish Patent Office (PPO), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), successfully launched the Polish edition of the WIPO publication "Enterprising Ideas: A Guide to Intellectual Property (IP) for Startups" during the international conference titled "IP Strategy for SMEs in a Competitive Market", in Warsaw, Poland.  This guide, designed to help startups navigate the complexities of IP, was introduced as a key resource for polish entrepreneurs seeking to protect and manage their innovations.

Launch of Enterprising Ideas: A Guide to IP for Startups (Polish Edition)

The international conference featured a keynote address from WIPO's Director of the Division for Transition and Developed Countries, Mr. Habip Asan, who emphasized the growing importance of IP as a strategic asset for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). He highlighted how IP drives innovation and economic growth, especially in the Visegrad group (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia).

A dedicated panel focused on the launch of the Polish version of Enterprising Ideas. On this occasion, Mr. Asan reiterated WIPO’s commitment to inclusivity, outlining how the guide serves as a practical tool tailored for Polish startups to navigate the complex IP landscape.

This resource offers step-by-step guidance, practical Polish case studies, and straightforward checklists, demonstrating how small businesses can use IP to stay competitive and manage risks.

Ms. Sarah Nassar, Associate Program Officer, IP for Business Division (IPBD), further expanded on the guide, presenting it as a comprehensive resource designed to help startups at every stage of their journey. She stressed the need for startups to effectively integrate IP into their business strategies to minimize risks and maximize value creation. Using local success stories such as Yaza Games, who also shared their experience during the event, she illustrated how effective IP strategies can bolster market positions and foster growth.

One Day IP Workshop for Startups

In conjunction with the conference, IPBD organized a one-day IP workshop for startups. During the workshop, participants received tailored, one-on-one consultations with IP experts, focusing on strategies derived from WIPO’s IP Diagnostic Tool. This interactive discussion provided startups with practical guidance on patent filing, trademark protection, and trade secrets, while also introducing them to WIPO’s International Registration systems like the PCT and Madrid System, especially for those considering international expansion.

“We would like to thank the WIPO and the PPO for the opportunity to analyze our current intellectual property protection strategy and for valuable tips on how to strengthen it, especially in the context of expansion into Asian markets” - NanoSci

The workshop greatly benefited from the expertise of Polservice, a local patent attorney office, which, as part of its mandate to raise IP awareness in Poland, offered the invaluable services of Ms. Maria Łozińska.
