First Workshop Organized Under WIPO Effective SME Intermediary Program in Cameroon
October 9, 2024
The inaugural workshop under the WIPO Effective SME Intermediary Program took place at the Chamber of Commerce of Cameroon (CCIMA), in Douala, on September 26 and 27, 2024. Titled "From Idea to Action," the workshop is focused on entrepreneurial strategies and intellectual property (IP) protection, aiming to equip entrepreneurs with the tools needed to develop profitable projects while integrating IP into their business strategies as they expand into new markets.
The workshop marks the launch of a three-month pilot IP and business mentorship program, where 24 selected businesses will receive tailored guidance from CCIMA and local experts to develop their export strategies, while simultaneously strengthening their IP management. This mentorship initiative aims to provide in-depth support to entrepreneurs, helping them navigate both local and international markets with a robust IP strategy in place.
The first day of the workshop concentrated on key aspects of business development, including creating robust business models, financial analysis, and leveraging digital marketing strategies. Participants gained practical insights into building sustainable business frameworks to support growth.
The second day was centered on the significance of IP, featuring case studies and strategies for protecting intangible assets. Entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to develop personalized action plans for managing their IP portfolios.
Participating companies had the opportunity to bring their products forward for a comprehensive analysis of their IP situation. This initiative focused on helping businesses optimize their IP strategies, offering tailored guidance on how to strengthen and protect their innovations. A key tool utilized during this process was the WIPO IP Diagnostics for OAPI, an effective resource that provided businesses with valuable localized insights and recommendations, specially adapted to the legal context of the Member States of the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI).
A key focus of the workshop was the specific challenges and needs faced by participating companies in the agribusiness sector. Through interactive sessions and case studies, participants gained valuable insights into how IP can be leveraged to protect and enhance their business operations. The event also served to enlighten CCIMA staff on how their services, including IP advisory, can better support companies in their journey toward growth and innovation.
This workshop signals an important step in fostering entrepreneurial success and innovation in Cameroon, helping businesses capitalize on the advantages of IP as a key business enabler.
