Reference is made to the implementation of the Appropriate Technology project in Tanzania.
As outlined in the project document (CDIP/13/9), all of the envisaged key deliverables of the project have been completed.
In particular, the implementation of the project has resulted in the (i) identification of two development needs areas for which appropriate technologies are required and the preparation of (ii) two patent search requests, (iii) two patent search reports (iv) two technology landscape reports, and (v) two business plans for the implementation of the identified appropriate technologies at the national level.
The Technology Landscape Reports and Business Plans have also been professionally edited and formatted.
In addition, the implementation modalities of the project have also included the institutionalization of a National Expert Group (NEG) to spearhead the project at the national level and the assignment of national and international experts.
Overall, the project has enabled and strengthened the capacity of Tanzania to effectively utilize scientific and technical information and has led to the identification of two appropriate technologies which will provide long term solutions to the two specific development related issues, namely in the area of (i) Processing of Seaweeds for Carrageenan Extraction and
(ii) Aquaculture.
In view of the above, and in order to finalize the project and to discuss issues related to the future implementation of the identified technologies at the national level, it is proposed to convene a national meeting in Zanzibar from April 17 to 19, 2018.
Zanzibar hosts a number of national institutions in the area of seaweed farming which is a key economic activity. A number of outreach programs have already been undertaken by the national consultant for the dissemination of information related to the identified appropriate technology for the processing of seaweeds for carrageenan extraction.
