Following consultations with the Swedish Patent and Registration Office (PRV), the joint WIPO-Sida Advanced Training and Advisory Program on Intellectual Property Rights in the Global Economy for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) is proposed to take place from January 28 to February 16, 2018, in cooperation with PRV and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), in Stockholm, Sweden. The training program will take into account gender balance and composition of senior officials from the private and public sectors. The objective of the Training Program is to contribute to intellectual property (IP) institution building in LDCs for economic growth and development. The Training Program promotes familiarity with the legislation, enforcement, administration and management aspects of IP, from a national, regional and an international perspective. Emphasis will be given on the role of IP in national economic development such as the importance of patent information for technological capacity building, design protection, the contribution of collective management societies in wealth creation and the impact of piracy and counterfeiting of protected works. The progress made in the implementation of the WIPO Istanbul Ministerial Declaration of May 2011 and the WIPO Deliverables as well as the outcome of the Mid-Term Review Meeting of the Program of Action that was held in Antalya, Turkey, in May 2016 will be specific subjects of presentations and discussions during the Training Program. The various initiatives taken by you for the benefit of the LDCs such as access to scientific and technological information, the establishment of technology centers in LDCs, the use of traditional knowledge and transfer of technology will be subjects of discussions.
