Study Visit to the Namibian Society of Composer and Authors of Music (NASCAM) One of the requests from a number of African Governments is the training of the staff of the national collective management organization (CMO). The General Managers (GMs) for 6 national CMOs are new and have either no or little experience in the management of such organizations. The countries are as follows: Botswana, Cabo Verde, Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, and Sao Tome & Principe. Collective management is a very specialized area and skill acquisition is essential in order to have a successful enterprise. Having new recruits, especially at the head of the organization, slows development. Learning as you go is good, but this needs to be supplemented with a type of on the job training. A study visit to a more advanced and stable society provides an excellent opportunity to quickly develop skills. In additional to the GMs, staff of the 6 CMOs need to have their skills improved and updated. NASCAM is a well-run and good functioning office. Spending time reviewing their processes and procedures, as well as working side by side with local staff would allow the new GMs to quickly come up to speed. Further, it offers the Officials from the countries listed above an opportunity to see and learn within an African context, from an office whose size they are able to relate, promoting south-south cooperation. |
