1. This memorandum seeks your approval for CLD staff members to participate in the Seoul Copyright Forum and the International Conference on Open Source in Seoul, organized by the Korea Copyright Commission on October 17 and 18, 2017. 2. In April 2014, the Committee on Development and Intellectual Property (CDIP) adopted the Revised Proposal on Possible New WIPO Activities Related to Using Copyright to Promote Access to Information and Creative Content (document CDIP/13/11, attached). In accordance with CDIP’s mandate, CLD have integrated open source topic in WIPO copyright related courses and training programs for 2015-2016, in order to raise the awareness of open source software development in the context of the broader copyright system. 3. At the 19th session of CDIP which took place in May 2017, CLD presented a progress report of the activities in document CDIP/13/11 (document CDIP/19/8, attached) and the CDIP directed the Secretariat to continue to integrate the subject of open source in WIPO copyright related courses and training programs. 4. In this context, it is suggested to take part in the Seoul Copyright Forum and the International Conference on Open Source (draft program attached), which will take place in Seoul on October 17 and 18. The events are organized by the Korea Copyright Commission and WIPO has been invited to cover several topics of the program. The events will be open to public, and approximately 300 participants are expected. 5. In line with the mandate of the CDIP, it is suggested to invite a number of representatives of copyright offices in the region. The countries suggested by the host government include: China, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam. 6. This activity is foreseen in the Work Plan for the year 2017 and sufficient budget is available under line 0007 D0042. The cost estimate is attached. For your consideration and approval, please. |
