National Expert Group Meeting on the Implementation of the WIPO Development Agenda Project: Capacity-Building in the Use of Appropriate Technology-Specific Technical and Scientific Information as a Solution for Identified Development Challenges in E |
Description: |
Reference is made to the implementation of the above mentioned Project in Ethiopia. The Appropriate Technology project was launched in Addis Ababa in 2015 and since then has well advanced to achieve some of the key project deliverables with significant direct engagement with national institutions. The Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office (EIPO) has been assigned as the national focal point for the project and in addition, the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) and the Engineering College, Addis Ababa, also serve as national partners for implementation which ensure that a number of scientific and technical organizations are directly involved in the implementation process. The deliverables completed under the project include the institutionalization of the National Expert Group; the recruitment of an international and national consultant; the identification of two development need areas namely (i) a solar coffee dryer to reduce post-harvest losses and to improve coffee quality and (ii) production of poultry feed from agro-industrial by products which will enhance poultry production; and the preparation of two patent search requests for the identification of relevant technologies to address the identified development need areas. In addition, patent search reports have also been received from the Austria Patent Office which identified relevant technologies for a solar coffee dryer and the production of poultry feed from agro-industrial by products. These documents will support the identification of an appropriate technological solution for the identified national problem areas. Technological capacity building focusing on the use of technical and patent information has also been provided throughout the implementation of the Project. A recently completed technological capacity building mission to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, included three participants from Ethiopia and facilitated learning from the technological development experiences of othe |
